Behind the Studio Doors
| Written by Tatyana Zidarov | Rock Fusion Studio

There is something special about the days leading up to the Over the Mountain Studio Tour. The calendar seems to move a little faster, and suddenly there are lists everywhere—pieces to finish, studios to tidy, displays to arrange, and details to check one more time. There is wonderful energy that comes with knowing that soon our doors will open and we’ll have the opportunity to share not only our artwork, but the places where that artwork comes to life. For artists, the anticipation is about more than preparing a collection of work. It’s about getting ready to share the stories, experiments, happy accidents, and countless hours behind each piece.
This year, I’m especially excited to share some of the new ideas and inspiration that have come from my time at Penland School of Craft, where I had the opportunity to explore new techniques and new ways of thinking about glass. Evgeny has been on his own creative journey as well, spending time at Pilchuck Glass School and bringing new inspiration back to the studio. Visitors will find his handcrafted jewelry alongside my glass work, reflecting both of our creative journeys and our love of exploring new ideas. There is something wonderful about being surrounded by creativity and never quite knowing where the next idea will lead. Some pieces are carefully planned, while others evolve through experimentation and those happy accidents that can turn into something unexpectedly beautiful.
And then there is the anticipation of the visitors themselves. Every year, the Studio Tour brings together people who love art, enjoy discovering something new, and appreciate the opportunity to meet artists in their own creative spaces. Whether you come with a plan to visit a particular studio or simply follow the map and see where the day takes you, there is always the possibility of finding an unexpected treasure, meeting a new favorite artist, or leaving inspired to make something yourself.
The countdown is on, and the studios are coming to life in preparation. We are looking forward to opening our studio doors, sharing what we’ve been creating, and welcoming both familiar faces and first-time visitors. So, mark your calendar, gather your friends, plan your route—or leave room for a little spontaneity—and come experience the creativity, craftsmanship, and excitement of the Over the Mountain Studio Tour. We can’t wait to see you!
