Anne Rule-Thompson
Painting and Sculpture
Anne Rule-Thompsons is a sculptor and encaustic painter. She creates clay sculptures and encaustic paintings mixed with found objects to produce images that tell the story of places in nature that inspire her. In her work, she uses the unpredictability of hot wax to explore the relationship of water and earth, believing that the most beautiful places in nature bear the marks of the battle between the flow of water and the solidness of earth.
While her degree is in painting, she moved into ceramics because of its physical ability to break the surface and create unexpected color and texture variation. Encaustic painting has become the bridge that allows a fluid texture and immediacy to painting and sculpture in its ability to build the surface quickly and include collaged items that would formerly be burned away in the kiln firing process. It is the marriage of these materials that launched new explorations, including both painting and sculptural processes.Â
