Beauty One Piece at a Time

Laurie Monsma, a talented local fiber artist, has been a steady presence as an Over the Mountain Studio Tour goer. This year she will be part of the Tour as one of our two Emerging Artists. The Tour is committed to supporting unsung makers and giving their talent a stage.

We asked Laurie to introduce herself and tell us a bit about what attracted her to fibers.

“I began sewing when I was 10 years old. I made my own patterns and play clothes after my mom taught me how to use the sewing machine. Over the years I made garments for myself, bridesmaids dresses for my wedding, home decor items, outfits and costumes for my kids. I even made a few traditional quilts.

“In 2017 I discovered the world of “Art Quilts” and began the journey of finding my own artistic voice using the fabrics and textiles I loved working with over the years. This voice is still emerging as I learn many different techniques, play with color and texture and explore how to apply dimension to fabric art pieces and wall hangings in unusual ways.

“I am honored to be part of the OTMST’s Emerging Artist Program this year working alongside amazing, talented artists and introducing my unique fabric/textile art to Studio Tour visitors.”

Don’t miss this years Covid Conscious Tour on November 13 and 14 from 10 to 5.. Don’t forget your masks – we won’t. Stay up to date on the tour by visiting our website at www.overthemountainstudiotour.com. We are so excited to show you what we’ve been up to.
