WooHoo....Big News!

Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 25. That’s the date for the Shenandoah Planing Mill’s third annual Summertime Festival. The Over the Mountain Studio Tour is partnering with this fascinating family-owned Jefferson County business and 12 of our members will represent the Tour with their uniquely innovative handmade art and craft. We’ll be under roof so weather will not daunt us…or you. And there’ll be a particular emphasis on demonstrations – always a favorite. We’ll keep you up-to-date in future posts.

April was jurying month for the Tour. We search for artists whose work will complement that of our current members, whose work is exemplary and folks who will pitch in to make this all volunteer effort happen. We have four new members this year for a total of 19. Help us welcome them:

Luke Bauer of Blue Ridge Wildcraft who starts with a tree each year and ends with beautiful handmade baskets and more. You may have met him because he showed as an Emerging Artist on last year’s Tour.

Laurie Monsma a unique textile artist who creates whimsical fabric creations. There is no material that doesn’t hold potential for her as she designs and creates her wonderful fabric collages. She also showed as an Emerging Artist last year and our tour-goers definitely approved.

Esther Murphy a potter of functional stoneware and porcelain. She brings a unique touch to familiar everyday items that invite handling and use.

Denise Ray a multitalented artist who will present her beautiful traditional weavings. Good artists are masters of details and her finishing glows.

There’s no moss growing under our feet. You’ll be seeing new artists and new work from our seasoned members. We can’t wait to see you!
